Kereru

Kereru
Kereru are a big bird. Kereru are one of the largest pigeons in the world. Kereru
can way up to 650g and are about 50 cm long. The kereru has feathers on their
back and head that are  green, but look like purple in the sunlight. Kereru have
white feathers on their chest.

Kereru live in forests  in the North and South Island, parks, reserves and gardens
all over New Zealand. The Kereru does not migrate to other places.

Kereru like to eat foliage, bugs and fruit in trees. Kereru are able to eat big fruit
such as miro, tawa and karaka. The flesh around seeds is digested by the Kererus
stomach and eventually the seeds pass through the bird and are planted throughout
the forest with their own manure.

When it is breeding time males do acrobatics in the air to impress the females.
From september to march the kereru breed. Kereru build flimsy, shallow nests for
their eggs which are built in native trees, well shaded from the sun.  Kereru lay
one egg and the chick is feed on regurgitated ‘pigeon milk’ and later they are feed
fruit pulp.

The Dangers that the kereru face are stoats, rats and possums because they eat the
kereru eggs and young.
